Eyjafjallajökull from Þórólfsfell, Nocturne

I drove to the closest vantage point to the volcano that's accessible - the base of Þórólfsfell mountain. Seen across the Markarfljót Valley, this is looking as directly into the crater as you can get without taking to the air.

In this long exposure, a couple of lava explosions were captured free of the veil of steam and ash. In a large print, the trails made by the flying lava can be clearly made out.

The wind in this valley is very intense. I had to find shelter behind a wall of rock, but even so the wind was vibrating the camera on the tripod and the rain would sometimes find its way onto the lens. Every now and then a bit of ash would end up in my eyes or my teeth. It took several attempts to produce a sharp image with no raindrops!

You can see the power of the wind in the almost flat plume of ash from the crater.
